STARSENSE EXPLORER 12" Dobsonian Telescope
Celestron has transformed the traditional Dobsonian telescope with StarSense Explorer–the first Dobsonian system that uses your smartphone to analyze the night sky and determine its position in real time. This large-aperture Celestron StarSense Explorer telescope is an excellent choice for both dedicated beginners and experienced observers, thanks to the intuitive mobile app and its helpful step-by-step tutorials. It truly feels like having a personal guide to the night sky. With its generous aperture, this telescope offers long-term value, ensuring that it will continue to satisfy your observing needs as your interest in astronomy grows. Even seasoned astronomers will appreciate the convenience and impressive views delivered by the StarSense Explorer 12” Dobsonian.
Dock, Launch, Explore
Forget about complicated star charts, inaccurate planetarium apps, and complex computerized mounts. With StarSense Explorer, finding celestial targets becomes quicker, easier, and far more precise. Within just minutes of setting up the telescope, you’ll be navigating the night sky with confidence. Simply place your smartphone into the specially designed StarSense dock and open the StarSense Explorer app.
Once your phone is aligned with the telescope’s optics–a quick and straightforward process–the app generates a list of celestial objects currently visible in your sky. Select an object and arrows will appear on your phone’s screen, directing you as you move the telescope. When the target reaches the eyepiece’s field of view, the on-screen bullseye turns green. While observing, you can also enjoy hundreds of narrated descriptions and explore detailed information about thousands of objects within the app’s extensive database.
High-Quality Altazimuth Base
A highly stable Dobsonian base forms the solid foundation of the StarSense Explorer system. The base incorporates large-diameter altitude bearings with adjustable tension, Teflon azimuth bearings, and reinforced side panel braces for added rigidity–features not commonly found on many 12” Dobsonian mounts. The altitude bearings allow for smooth vertical motion, while the built-in altitude “brake” lets you fine-tune the tension for optimal balance even when accessories slightly shift the weight distribution.
An ergonomic panning knob on the telescope tube provides a comfortable grip, allowing you to aim the telescope accurately without transferring heat from your hands into the optical system. As celestial objects slowly drift across the sky, you’ll be able to track them effortlessly with small adjustments to the telescope’s position.
Dazzling Views with High-Quality Optics
Equipped with a powerful 12" Newtonian reflector optical tube, this telescope gathers enough light to reveal remarkable details in celestial targets. Expect bright, crisp views of Jupiter’s four Galilean moons, its cloud bands and Great Red Spot, the majestic rings of Saturn, the glowing gases of the Orion Nebula, the dust lanes within the Lagoon Nebula, and our neighboring Andromeda Galaxy. Compared with other StarSense Explorer Dobsonian models, the 12” version offers 2.25× more light-gathering ability than the 8” model and 1.44× more than the 10”, enabling improved observation of faint deep-sky objects.
All mirror surfaces feature XLT optical coatings, which increase light transmission and improve contrast for brighter, clearer views. With XLT coatings, subtle details become easier to detect when observing the Moon, planets, and distant galaxies and nebulae. The mirrors themselves are made from low-expansion optical glass, helping maintain image quality even as environmental temperatures change.
The telescope also includes a premium 2” Crayford focuser, designed for smooth, precise focusing without image shift. A 2”-to-1.25” adapter and a 2” extension tube are included, allowing compatibility with nearly any 1.25” or 2” telescope eyepiece. The focuser also features a locking thumbscrew to secure your focus once the sharpest image has been achieved.
Perfect for the City or Dark Sky Sites
Even from locations affected by urban light pollution, the Celestron StarSense Explorer 12” Dobsonian is powerful enough to easily reveal objects like Jupiter, Saturn, open star clusters such as the Pleiades, double stars like Alberio, the Orion Nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy, and many other bright celestial highlights.
If you’re able to transport the telescope to a darker observing location, even more targets will become visible. Under relatively dark skies, this 12" Dobsonian opens the door to observing hundreds of fascinating celestial objects.
Moving your StarSense Explorer Dobsonian is simple thanks to the ergonomic carry handles located at the balance points of both the tube and the base. Protective dust covers are also included for the front of the optical tube and the focuser.
Smartphone Compatibility
StarSense Explorer is compatible with most modern smartphones. The system supports Android 12 and later, as well as iOS 18 or newer, including iPhone XR and newer models. Users with older smartphones may still run the app if already installed, but they will not be able to reinstall it after removing it. For a full list of compatible devices, refer to the official compatibility guide.
Patented StarSense Sky Recognition Technology
StarSense Explorer uses patented technology along with your smartphone to determine exactly where the telescope is aimed in the night sky. A Lost in Space Algorithm (LISA)–similar to the systems used by orbiting satellites for orientation–allows the app to match star patterns detected overhead with its internal database.
While many astronomy apps claim to help locate objects, most rely only on the phone’s internal gyroscopes and accelerometers, which are far less accurate than LISA-based sky recognition. This advanced technology ensures the app can precisely determine when your selected object is centered in the eyepiece.
Enhance Your Setup
Keep your smartphone powered throughout the night by adding the PowerTank Glow 5000 to your observing kit (sold separately). Designed specifically with StarSense Explorer Dobsonians in mind, this 2-in-1 accessory combines a red flashlight with a USB power bank for charging mobile devices in the field. Using the included bands, you can attach the PowerTank Glow 5000 to the two mounting posts on the front of the StarSense dock, keeping it conveniently positioned for charging your phone during observations.
For even faster performance, consider pairing the StarSense Explorer 12” Dobsonian with the USB Cooling Fan for Dobsonian Telescopes (sold separately). The cooling fan helps the primary mirror reach ambient outdoor temperature more quickly, allowing you to achieve sharper views sooner. It mounts directly to the rear cell of the Dobsonian and operates with any USB power source.
