QHYCCD PoleMaster Electronic Polar Scope
Introduction
Any experienced astrophotographer knows that achieving accurate polar alignment can be a real challenge. You might spend several hours under valuable dark skies trying to nail perfect alignment, only to be unsure if you’ve succeeded. Even after aligning successfully, a small bump to the mount could ruin it, forcing you to start over. Before you know it, you’ve spent so much time aligning that dawn breaks, and it’s time to pack everything up.
Enter the PoleMaster – a smart solution to this ongoing struggle. Developed by QHYCCD, the PoleMaster makes polar alignment fast and effortless. By following a handful of simple steps, you can achieve precise polar alignment in just 2–3 minutes, with accuracy as high as 30 arcseconds.
With the PoleMaster, there’s no need to twist your telescope into awkward positions to clear the polar axis. You won’t have to crouch or kneel to peer through a polar scope. There's also no need to dim or eliminate light sources to let your eyes adjust in the dark to spot Polaris. No more inputting date and time or rotating your mount to strange angles. Even leveling the mount becomes unnecessary. The PoleMaster allows you to view and verify the mount's alignment at any moment. If your mount is bumped, you can easily re-align without starting the process again.
The PoleMaster offers around 30 arcseconds of pixel-level resolution. Its camera sensor essentially functions as a precise measuring tool, offering far better accuracy than what a traditional optical scope can provide. In optimal conditions, it can deliver alignment precision down to 30 arcseconds.
Thanks to its broad 11° × 8° field of view, the electronic polar finder makes spotting Polaris a breeze.
After initial calibration with the PoleMaster, you only need to perform a single-star sync. This greatly simplifies equatorial mount setup.
PoleMaster can be mounted onto virtually any equatorial mount using the appropriate adapter. Even mounts with only a single RA axis and no declination correction benefit from it. Once the polar axis is accurately aligned, drift in the declination direction is greatly reduced, improving performance significantly even for basic mounts.
Features
PoleMaster achieves polar alignment by following a straightforward principle: identify the celestial pole and align it with the rotation center of the mount’s RA axis. By doing so, the RA axis of your mount becomes parallel with Earth’s rotational axis. The PoleMaster is installed in front of the mount’s RA axis and contains a high-sensitivity camera that continuously captures live images of stars near the North Celestial Pole. Its sensor is more sensitive than the human eye, allowing it to detect Polaris and nearby faint stars. By analyzing their positions, the software calculates the exact location of the true celestial pole. Simultaneously, it identifies the rotational center of the mount’s RA axis and marks both positions on the screen. Your job is simply to adjust the mount until both points overlap – that’s it. Aligning the polar axis becomes as easy as lining up two dots. Simple!
Compared to other alignment methods, the PoleMaster offers these advantages:
-
Speed and ease of use: No need to reposition the telescope to unblock the polar scope. No awkward bending or squatting to look through a scope. No dark adaptation required to find Polaris. No need to level the mount or input date/time into a handset and determine where to aim the mount.
-
Precision: Thanks to its high-resolution imaging sensor, the PoleMaster can achieve alignment accuracy that’s simply not possible by eye. With a pixel resolution of 30 arcseconds, you can reach alignment precision at that same level.
-
Wide view of the polar area: The generous 11×8 degree field of view makes Polaris easy to locate.
-
Simple installation: Compatible with virtually any equatorial mount using dedicated adapter rings, even for mounts lacking built-in polar scopes.
-
Live monitoring and correction: PoleMaster lets you watch your polar alignment in real time. If alignment shifts, you can correct it instantly without restarting the process.
-
No need for three-star alignment: After polar alignment is complete, only a single-star alignment is necessary, saving you time and effort.
-
Ideal for single-axis mounts: Even on RA-only mounts, proper alignment using PoleMaster reduces declination drift, boosting tracking accuracy and overall performance.
