Pegasus Astro · SmartEye
An electronic eyepiece. A colour astronomy camera. One device for your existing telescope.
Watch detail build through live stacking, explore the view at the eyepiece and save what you discover.
Choose your observing experience
From a personal observing session to a school astronomy evening, SmartEye brings electronic observing to a familiar eyepiece-style experience.
Look through the integrated display and use the Astro Crown to adjust settings. Start with short integrations and let stacking reveal more detail.
You need: a suitable telescope, tracking mount and power source.
Use supported SkySafari integration to explore object information and share observations during group sessions or classroom demonstrations.
Check: compatible mobile device, app version, licence and connection setup.
Connect compatible astronomy software through ASCOM Alpaca Camera and record FITS data for processing beyond the observing session.
Check: software support, network configuration and installed SmartEye release.
Technology with a purpose
Explore the hardware and software behind the view, with practical explanations of what each feature adds to your observing session.
Collect colour exposures for live stacking or save image data for later processing. The sensor captures the sky; the eyepiece display shows the processed result.
A 2560 × 2560 OLEDoS display presents a circular observing view. Adjustable brightness and diopter help different observers find a comfortable view.
Automatic alignment, stacking and colour enhancement improve the displayed image as exposures accumulate. Results depend on the target, tracking and sky conditions.
Active TEC cooling reduces thermal sensor noise. Leave the vents clear and use a suitable power source to support stable operation.
The Astro Crown rotary control gives access to observing settings. Standalone eyepiece operation needs power but does not require a laptop.
Power the electronics and cooling through USB-C. Use the supplied 12 V converter or a suitable manufacturer-recommended USB-C power source.
In a supported app and mount configuration, identify the field, access object information and share the electronic view. Check app version and licence requirements.
ASCOM Alpaca Camera connectivity supports compatible capture software such as N.I.N.A. Save FITS data for later processing; verify the driver and workflow.
Internal storage and a microSD slot provide image-storage options. A microSD card is a separate accessory.
Use a tracking equatorial or altazimuth mount. Frame derotation helps align stacked exposures; it cannot remove blur occurring within an exposure.
Software version 1.4.x adds fine autofocus with a compatible ASCOM Alpaca motor focuser. The focuser is additional hardware.
Built-in motion sensors help detect vibration. The ST-4 port is fitted; direct standalone guiding during live stacking remains a manufacturer-described future feature.
Astronomical images are manufacturer illustrations. They are not guaranteed results from a particular telescope or exposure. Performance varies with optics, sky conditions, tracking and total integration time.
Connected observing
In a supported configuration, SkySafari can request a plate solve from SmartEye and use the returned position with a compatible connected mount. Integration also provides device settings, status, celestial-object information and image sharing. Mount connection and app support must be checked for your specific equipment.
The high-resolution OLEDoS display produces a circular eyepiece view. Adjustable brightness and diopter settings help accommodate different observers. Pegasus lists a maximum brightness of 1,800 nits and a contrast ratio of 500,000:1. Exported images use the sensor's rectangular image format.
Capture FITS data for processing beyond the observing session. ASCOM Alpaca Camera connectivity supports compatible imaging applications. Pegasus also lists INDI support; confirm the current driver, supported functions and software combination before planning an automated workflow. Compatibility with every mount, dome or focuser is not implied.
Normal eyepiece operation remains available without a computer. Camera-mode exposure options and guiding workflows depend on the external software and installed SmartEye release.
Version 1.4.x adds Alpaca-focuser integration, fine autofocus, an optional stacking-progress overlay and export of dark frames with images. Version 1.3.x introduced a drift indicator, quick-access controls, sensor-gain selection and additional web-dashboard image adjustments. Install a compatible release to use its features; future announcements are not included capabilities.
Images above are manufacturer illustrations. Observing results vary with equipment, target and conditions; illustrations are not performance guarantees.
The technical specifications page advertises up to 30°C below ambient; the manufacturer FAQ states 25°C. Confirm the rating for the supplied hardware. Actual cooling depends on ambient conditions and the power source.

The 90° specification describes the apparent eyepiece viewing field. Actual sky coverage depends on telescope focal length, sensor coverage and any reducer.
Plan your optical train
A 2-inch connection is the starting point. Focus travel, optical spacing, tracking and physical clearance determine the complete setup.
SmartEye accepts standard 2-inch eyepiece connections. A 1.25-inch setup needs an appropriate optional adapter. Confirm focus travel, optical path length, secure retention, balance and clearance before selecting accessories.
Guiding: the ST-4 connector does not by itself guarantee standalone guiding. Pegasus currently describes direct ST-4 corrections during live stacking as a future software feature. Confirm firmware capabilities for your intended workflow.
Use the manufacturer's drawing to check the body envelope, nosepiece and sensor reference plane. Account for every adapter, filter and diagonal in a reduced optical train, and check access to the eyepiece and control knob.
Use the supplied USB-C cable and 12V-to-USB-C converter with a suitable 12 V source. Alternatively, follow Pegasus's guidance for a USB-C PD power bank rated at least 30 W and 30,000 mAh. Do not apply 12 V directly to SmartEye's USB-C input or connect 24/48 V to the supplied converter.
